What If You Can Wake Up As A Different Person?
Hotell, an Art House movie from Sweden is marked as the first movie that I watched in Kineforum.
But before I talked about the movie, I wanted to tell you shortly about this first-timer-thing. Kineforum is a non-commercial mini-theater located inside Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM), Jakarta. A place where you can watch the classic and contemporary movie, national and international ones. It's like a refreshing air to watch a non-English spoken language movie in the ocean of American blockbuster here and there. But anyway. The list of movies that shows are free or cost you like twenty or thirty thousand rupiahs. You can also donate voluntarily after reserve your ticket. You can just put your money inside a wooden box on the right side of the reception table.
Being a latecomer that I am. I arrived ten minutes before the movie started, exhausted from all the walked from the entry gate, I reserved my ticket and also bought a much-needed ion drink. When I realized that I have to donate and had no idea, how much do people regularly donate? I just put my ten thousand rupiahs inside the box. All is well until I sat before the movie began where you can watch a few clips about simple rules to watch in Kineforum.
1st, Do not bring drink or food from outside of the theater. (I just took a big gulp of my pocari..ashamed, put the bottle inside my bag) 2nd, Do not disturb another person (the video showed a boy put his feet up on the back seat in front of him) I'm like okay, I wasn't that savage. The third or fourth, I do not quite remember it, was to donate an amount of money where the video showed a hand put One hundred thousand rupiahs. I asked my friend with an insecure voice, 'How much did you donate?' and she answered 'for like, thirty thousand' my face kinda drop 'Oh. I just put my ugly looking ten thousand'

So.. I made a mental note about arriving earlier next time I come, so I can breathe and think clearly about anything at all.
Back to the movie. This movie is quite simple but also very special. The title was created by a concept of waking up in various new hotels every day is like wake up as a new person you wanted to choose to be today. The main characters are misfits, lonely and depressed group of people from a different background took a hotel-trip where you can be someone other than your own self as each day goes by.
The main character is a woman with a happy marriage and soon-to-be-born kid suffer from a denial after the unexpected premature birth of her first child. She lives in denial wanted to exchange life with other than herself at that moment. Meet the group of four people in her therapy class, then, they arranged a hotel trip for them. They rent rooms in a different kind of hotel, and always have a meeting when they gather and tell their story one after another. Stories about who they are in their imagination which is contradictive from their reality. One woman who had experienced a sexual assault since childhood and lost her confidence and pride completely as a woman, imagine that she's popular and everybody wanted to be with her. The old and lonely woman shares her story about meeting a stranger and have sex in a public bathroom. A grown-up man who had a mother complex and always think perpetually about his loving mother (because his real mother is an abusive one) tell his imagination that he is Mayan Tribe. Because when he closes his eyes dreaming about how is it feel to be a Mayan tribe, he just not found his mother anywhere in the corner of his head. Lastly, the man from the normal family. He is quite a unique character for me. He has a healthy and normal family since he was a kid up until now when he married a woman and had two little kids. He was depressed out of all the normality. He feels like it isn't the life he dreamed about. So he depressed. At the ending, all of them are forced to face and not run from their wound. After all, being another person is as difficult as dealing with the problem. But why run away?

It's an interesting concept still. How many of you imagine a different and better life when you open your eyes tomorrow in the morning?
